Coach Holiday to Switzerland

CoachIn July 44 members enjoyed a coach holiday to Switzerland.  The scenery was absolutely stunning framed by a backdrop of magnificent mountains with much to see and do.

Regional President, Rosemary Jasper said ‘Although it may seem a long way to go by coach the fun and laughter we have on board makes the time go very quickly and before you know it you have arrived at your destination’.

Regional Council Camp - 23-28 May 2008

Guess what, Spring Bank Holiday and it rained, what a surprise!  Well it wasn’t too bad and we did have the opening ceremony outside.  A walking Treasure Hunt was set for the weekend to be done at leisure between the rain clouds, very pleasant walk around the village and even the locals had time to stop and talk.  On Saturday night we played silly games in the village hall and On Sunday morning we joined the locals for breakfast in the village hall for the cost of £4 each, Full English and no washing up.  On the Sunday Evening we played skittles in the local hostelry as shown in the photo.

WEW skittles tournamentUnfortunately we had to have the closing ceremony in the village hall but at least Brian didn’t have to lower the flag.  Some stayed on for another week and this was when the weather really did get bad, on the Thursday we were caught up in the flash floods to hit Somerset but we carried on regardless as usual.  All in all we had a good weekend despite the weather.  Now we can look forward to Cornwall next year.

Regional Bowls - 11 May 2008

WEW Val Letts playing bowlsAt last, summer has arrived, well for the day anyway.  It was nice for the bowlers to play in the sunshine and enjoy the day.  The event was well attended with over 40 bowlers, Sarum won with a little help from Doug from Pinewood Shore followed a close second by Mendip. The ALBOF (all a bit of fun) trophy was won by Val Letts, who said she had been coming to the Bowls Drive for 35 years and had never won anything, well she has now!

Foresters Raise over £1 million for Charities

Fireworks

2006 was a record-breaking year for Foresters; together we raised £1.3 million up 83% on the previous year.

Foresters supported over 100 charities including local schools, local hospital appeals, local children's hospices and the Association of Children's Hospices (ACH).The Barnardo's anual Toy Appeal raised £145,000 and a variety of CLIC Sargent events raised almost £250,000. Not only did we help raise much needed funds for all the charities we support, our members put in a fantastic 260,000 volunteer house towards community projects.

Western England and Wales branches have to date managed to raise over a quarter of a million pounds!  Well done to you all!

Foresters & CLIC Sargent – Making the Future Brighter for Children with Cancer

Family Support Workers

In 2006, Foresters sponsored events raised almost £250,000 for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity. With no government funding, CLIC Sargent relies entirely on support like this to continue helping the 10 children and young people diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK.

CLIC Sargent social workers provide emotional and practical support to the whole family, whilst family support workers help to keep the home running. Finding time to do the ironing, take siblings to after school clubs and do household chores becomes low priority but having someone to do those things for you can make all the difference. One mum says, “Our family support worker helps out with everything from dusting and playing to toilet training! We feel as if we’ve known her for years.”
